Eligibility: 6th – 8th Graders Only | Class Schedule: Mondays and/or Thursdays

This fall, our middle schoolers will dive into the thrilling world of competitive robotics! Incoming students will be joining an existing, established team to conquer this year's official game challenge, BIOBUZZ™ presented by RTX.

Because our team is already meeting regularly throughout the summer to sharpen their skills, new students will join an established crew.

What the Season Entails:

    •    Engineering & Design: Students will brainstorm, troubleshoot, and optimize a custom robot, utilizing CAD On-Shape software and 3D printing to create custom parts.

    •    Coding & Control: Team members will use JAVA blocks coding to program the robot to perform both autonomously (self-driving) and via driver-guided controls.

    •    The Big Reveal: While the team is prepping now, the exact game rules and tabletop missions will be officially unveiled at the Season Kickoff on September 12th.

    •    League Competition: As proud members of the Michigan South Central Regional League, the team will compete in several local matches. Please note that matches often occur on evenings or weekends.

    •    The Engineering Portfolio: Robotics is about more than just the machine! Students will practice real-world teamwork to write a group paper and create a formal presentation reflecting their technical growth, which they will pitch to a panel of judges at the final tournament.

Important Expectations for Families:

Fees & Volunteering: Due to the high costs associated with parts, tournament registrations, and team equipment, families will be asked to choose one of the following options:

    •    Option A: Staff an extra fundraising concessions shift during the season (plus standard team volunteer duties). Note: This concessions requirement must be fulfilled before the end of the semester, or the additional $250 fee will be automatically applied to your account.

    •    Option B: Pay an additional $250 robotics fee upfront in lieu of the extra concessions shift.

This fall, students will work together to compete in BIOGLOWFounders Edition for FIRST® LEGO® League. Using the LEGO® Spike Prime Robot, students will learn blocks-based coding to solve specific challenges. They will develop skills in project management and team work. This year’s research theme is BIODIVERSITY. Students will work together to solve a problem related to Biodiversity: they will need to brainstorm, research ideas, and develop a solution together. Season kickoff is August 4th, so sign up early as additional meetups might occur prior to the usual fall schedule. There will be a final tournament on a weekend at the end of the semester where students will present their biodiversity solution, present their robot development, and compete in robot matches. Discover the power of your imagination through the art of storytelling! In this engaging creative writing class, students will explore a variety of writing styles, including short stories, poetry, personal narratives, fantasy, and more. Through fun writing prompts, creative exercises, and collaborative discussions, students will develop their unique voice while strengthening essential writing skills such as character development, dialogue, plot, setting, and descriptive language.

Whether you're an experienced writer or just beginning your creative journey, this class provides a supportive environment to experiment, share ideas, and grow in confidence. By the end of the session, students will have a collection of original works that showcase their creativity and imagination.

EXCEL Learning Community partners with Champions Gymnastics to bring you a fast-paced, high-energy NINJA program that combines gymnastics, obstacle training, and the excitement of parkour! Inspired by the thrill of American Ninja Warrior, this class challenges students to climb, swing, jump, and flip their way to strength, agility, and self-confidence.

Led by Champion Gymnastics‘ highly trained Master Ninjas, students progress through skill-building challenges designed to improve coordination, endurance, and problem-solving—all while having a blast. Whether your child is brand new or a seasoned ninja, this program offers the perfect mix of fun, fitness, and fearless adventure.

EXCEL Learning Community is excited to partner with Champions Gymnastics to offer a fun, skill-building gymnastics class for boys and girls ages 7 and up. Students will progress through cartwheels, bridges, backbends, handstands, and more—always with an emphasis on safety and fun.

With the help of Champions Gymnastics‘ TumblTrak, rope climbs, and rock wall, students gain strength, coordination, and confidence while enjoying the challenge of learning new skills. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced gymnast, this class provides a supportive environment for growth at every level.

2:00 - 3:00

Conversational ASL focuses on building the skills needed to chat comfortably in American Sign Language. Students will practice communicating in a variety of everyday situations while strengthening their signing, expressive skills, and comprehension. Along the way, participants will learn more about Deaf culture and the importance of inclusive communication. This class is designed to help students gain the skills and confidence to converse in ASL.
